San Vicente Del Coyolito, Nicaragua

helping a community grow

San Vicente del Coyolito is a small farming community in the northwest region of Nicaragua. The community typically has to cross a river, Rio San Rafael, to sell the fruits of their labor, get access to basic necessities, and for the children to attend school.

assessment trip

Five members of the project team traveled in February to meet with the community and gather data. The trip was a success and allowed us to focus the scope of our initial design. The travel team brought back useful information, helping the chapter develop immediate and long-term goals.

project closeout

Although the initial goal was to deliver a river crossing delays caused by COVID-19 and rapidly escalating political climate in the country required our chapter to re-assess achievable goals. After much deliberation, the chapter, EWB Nicaragua, and the community decided to shift focus to the communities second biggest need: improved water supply. All three stakeholders worked diligently to expedite the design and delivery of a water well which will greatly improve the communities farming capabilities and access to clean water. In addition to our engineering services, EWB-Alamo was able to deliver over $24,000 to help fund the construction of the water well, tank, and well house.

We would like to thank all the companies that participated in our last few bowling tournaments which directly helped us raise the funds provided for this project.
